One of the most thought provoking and topically relevant films I have seen in a long while. I am very impressed by the recent work of George Clooney. He has been showing by his personal casting choices to be morphing from a star to an actor who’s thoughtful choices as well as the ability of his ego to submerge himself into the needs of the project to exert influence beyond the immediate business needs of the film to the potentially wider needs of communicate these media paradoxes to the audience.

“From writer/director Stephen Gaghan, winner of the Best Screenplay Academy Award for Traffic, comes Syriana, a political thriller that unfolds against the intrigue of the global oil industry. From the players brokering back-room deals in Washington to the men toiling in the oil fields of the Persian Gulf, the film’s multiple storylines weave together to illuminate the human consequences of the fierce pursuit of wealth and power. As a career CIA operative (George Clooney) begins to uncover the disturbing truth about the work he has devoted his life to, an up-and-coming oil broker (Matt Damon) faces an unimaginable family tragedy and finds redemption in his partnership with an idealistic Gulf prince (Alexander Siddig). A corporate lawyer (Jeffrey Wright) faces a moral dilemma as he finesses the questionable merger of two powerful U.S. oil companies, while across the globe, a disenfranchised Pakistani teenager (Mazhar Munir) falls prey to the recruiting efforts of a charismatic cleric. Each plays their small part in the vast and complex system that powers the industry, unaware of the explosive impact their lives will have upon the world.”

“This is a great, complex movie. Its only faults are in the clarity of character motivations. This is not a liberal or conservative film. It is an exploration into the existing system that evolved over many years. At no point in the movie does it take any pot-shots at Bush, Republicans, or Democracts. In fact, non of those words are ever spoken. It is not a left/right – red/blue debate. At no point in time does it ever mention the political parties of those in charge. The fact is, be it a Republican or Democrat, this world depends on oil. Our country while split on how to obtain it, will do anything to make sure the flow is not cut off. This movie finds faults with the global economy. Faults with the US system that has been tweaked by both sides over the span of decades. Faults with the Middle East for squandering its earnings. Faults with emerging China and its impact on consumption. Anyone claiming this movie is politically motivated is a troll looking for attention and should be ignored.”

On a darker note, my research and follow-up on a disturbing media event led me down a very disconcerting road on the web. Last week there was a story that surfaced on the breaking news front of “Trophy Videos” emerging from a private military contractor’s employees website. This video documents mercenaries employed by the US government firing indiscriminately at Iraqi civilian motorists in Baghdad. The story has since vanished from the news feeds but my follow-up has discovered information about Aegis, Tim Spicer, his previous business partner Simon Mann as well as the world from which they come.

So I was researching a very important thread the other morning and I stumbled onto FeralChildren.com. But it was blown completely out of my conscious mind by this outrageous website. The fact that information offered by this website has been quoted and referenced by so many other sites and blogs is testimony to the fascination inherent in the human condition of weird, strange and extra-ordinary. There is no question in my mind that I am late to this site as a newsworthy event. I just had to put it up.

So it was late last night when my brother in law asked if he could use my laptop to get on the Internet. I went down to the kitchen to oblige and I saw that he had his Mac keyboard on the the table. “Herb Tea, ” He explained “Lucy spilled the herb tea on the keyboard.”
He promptly logged on to the web and within 30 seconds had found exactly what he was looking for. “What a geek,’ he mumbled under his breath as he began dismantling the device. Just remarkable that this guy would have built such an in depth how to set of pages.
Hats Off to Byron Gracey of Canada.
