Rave Story – The Birth of a Nation

A sensational, action packed new book called Rave Story has recently rocketed up from the streets of London and is quickly securing its place on the best seller list. Rave Story is based upon the true story and life memoirs of record producer, entrepreneur and club owner Otiz F. Angel and his meteoric rise from the ghettos of London to success as an international performer and businessman. As well as shedding light on the history of Rave culture, the clubbing scene and the origins of various genres of electronic dance music, this book comes from a different perspective as it also takes the reader on an emotional journey through the turbulence of the author’s stormy life.

Although at the outset seemingly a quagmire of violence, sex, drugs, horrifying events and traumatic experiences, by the end an astonishing reversal leaves the reader uplifted and in a positive state of mind.

The author’s style moves between first and third person, dramatising and accentuating pivotal events inside the book by telling the story from more than one point of view.

Like other titles such ‘This is Not A Rave’, and movies like ‘Go!’ and ‘Rise: The Story Of Rave Outlaw Disco Donnie’, Rave Story dishes the dirt on rave parties, ecstasy pills, weed, clubs, festivals, and some of the other drugs found at the fringes of party culture, but never seeks to glamorise, only to inform. Coupled with its insightful views on the history of house music, the book has been attracted praise from many influential people within dance culture and beyond.

Well here I go, ripping something else off the pages of GBH.TV, but again, it was sent to me by my friend Ross Von Berg.

Thank you Ross, now I only wish those folks over at GBH.TV would resolve some of their server bandwidth issues so I can watch the videos without the music being broken up. You listening out there GBH.TV ?

Josh Wink – “Higher State of Consciousness“

Now this is unexpected. The last time we heard anything from Josh Wink, he was making minimal-ish techno records that people sort of liked, and doing minimal-ish techno DJ sets that people often liked, and now…he’s reissuing singles he put out ten years ago? Good for him, we guess…

It’s only appropriate that Wink’s people got him a video to match this change, too. We’re not sure who directed this, but something tells us he/she/it is part of whatever apparatus made all those titillation-crazy videos for Armand Van Helden and such. That, or two different directors use a lot of the same models.

Early pop remixes were fairly simple; in the 1980s, “extended mixes” of songs were released to clubs and commercial outlets on vinyl 12-inch singles. These typically had a duration of six to seven minutes, and often consisted of the original song with 8 or 16 bars of instruments inserted, often after the second chorus; some were as simplistic as two copies of the song stitched end to end. As the cost and availability of new technologies allowed, many of the bands who were involved in their own production (such as Depeche Mode and Duran Duran) experimented with more intricate versions of the extended mix. Madonna began her career writing music for dance clubs and used remixes extensively to propel her career; one of her early boyfriends was noted DJ John Jellybean Benitez, who created several memorable mixes of her work.
